Our History

Welcome to the Nishna Valley Family YMCA web site. We are excited to have you visit our web site, but would be honored if you would come meet us in person at our wonderful facility that opened in 2004. Our facility was a collaborative effort between the Atlantic Area Recreation Foundation, the YMCA, the City of Atlantic, Atlantic Community Schools, and Atlantic Municipal Utilities. Without each of these entities participation this facility would not have been possible.

It has proven to be a wonderful facility that has been visited by numerous communities as a model for their hopes of a new recreation center. With over 1900 households totaling over 4000 members, this project has united our people and truly become a “community center”!

The Nishna Valley Family YMCA is a 501©3 not-for-profit organization headed by a 13 person volunteer board of directors. Seven full-time staff carry out the mission of the organization. We received our first charter in 1890. The Nishna Valley Family YMCA’s purpose is to provide programs and services to the Cass County area that address the needs of our constituency and that promote strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. On an average we provide over 40 different programs youth and adults. Our state of the art facility is over 46,000 square feet. We also provide membership and program scholarships for youth and families who can’t afford the regular fees. In 2014 the YMCA provided scholarships and subsidies to over 240 families totaling over $80,000.
